In the second innings of the Edgbaston Test, Ricky Ponting believes David Warner would perform well

Former captain Ricky Ponting has supported Australia’s top opener David Warner to perform with the bat in the current first Ashes 2023 Test against England. This comes as pressure is mounting on Warner to keep his spot in the side.

In the first innings of the first Test, Warner was struck out by Stuart Broad for only nine runs, making it 15 times in total that the left-hander has lost to the English bowler. If the seasoned starter struggles once again in the second inning, pressure will mount on him.<img decoding=”async” loading=”lazy” class=”alignnone wp-image-30481″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-in-the-second-innings-of-the-edgbaston-test-ricky-ponting-believes-david-warner-would-perform-well-download-2023-06-19t172559.454-11zon.png” alt=”” width=”1017″ height=”599″ />

However, Ponting maintains that there are indications from Warner’s performance against India in the World Test Championship Final as well as the first Edgbaston innings that indicate he may soon resume scoring runs.

The former Australia captain noted in the most recent edition of The ICC Review, “I thought he looked really good in the first innings of the WTC Final; the 40-odd he made there, he played really well.”

The way he really began his innings was the best I’ve seen him start in two years of Test cricket, despite the fact that he scored nine in the first innings here. It is still there, then.

I believe that he took the shot he did because he wasn’t able to score as easily as he would have liked to at the beginning of that inning. But there’s no denying that the second inning is crucial for him — not only for the sake of his career, but also for the outcome of this game and this series.

I believe he will score some runs if he begins in the same manner as he did in the first innings,” he said.

After bowling Australia out for 386 in their first innings, England was 28/2 at stumps on day three, leading by 35.
